Budget hotel group urges swift rules for short-term rentals


GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysia Budget Hotel Association Penang Chapter (MYBHA Penang) has urged the government to fast-track regulations for the short-term rental (STR) sector following a fire at a homestay in Batu Ferringhi that left eight guests injured.

The fire was reported on March 1.

“This tragic fire is a grave reminder that guest safety cannot be guaranteed in unregulated short-term rentals. Immediate regulation is needed to ensure that proper fire safety standards, certifications, and inspections are in place for all STR accommodations,” said MYBHA Penang chairman Andy Lau Eng Leong on Wednesday (March 4).

He clarified that MYBHA Penang is not opposed to the operation of STRs.

Lau also highlighted the economic impact of unregulated STRs.

“Without proper registration and licensing, governments miss out on potential revenue from tourism taxes, licensing fees, and other levies.

“Law-abiding hotels and budget accommodations that comply with all safety, health, and licensing requirements are put at a disadvantage when competing against unlicensed STR operators,” he said.
