PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated action over the recirculation of a video linked to a Singaporean who allegedly insulted Islam, depicting the act of stepping on the Quran.
In a statement, MCMC said the 2024 video, believed to have been recorded in Singapore, had recently resurfaced on social media, sparking public unease and tension.
"MCMC has received complaints from members of the public regarding the content, which is believed to have been re-uploaded and caused concern and tension among the community.
"Preliminary investigations found that the individual involved is believed to be a Singaporean and that the incident is also believed to have taken place in Singapore," it said in a statement on Monday (March 2).
The commission said it was working with social media platforms, particularly Threads, Facebook and TikTok, to ensure appropriate action was taken, including blocking the spread and access to the content in Malaysia.
"The spread of content touching on religious sensitivities and with potential to disrupt harmony in the country’s multiracial society is irresponsible and can be subject to legal action under existing laws,” the commission added.
The commission also advised the public not to upload, share or further disseminate the video.
