Cable theft syndicate busted, 9 held in Selangor

SHAH ALAM: Selangor police have solved at least three cable theft cases following the arrest of 9 suspects in a special operation conducted between last Monday (Feb 23) and Thursday.

State police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar (pic) said the nine suspects, six men and three women aged between 19 and 44, were picked up during a series of raids.

“Records show that most of them are hardened criminals with multiple criminal records involving cable theft, robbery and drug offences, including two suspects who were on the police wanted list,” he said at a press conference at the district police headquarters here on Monday.

He added that the group had been active since last year.

Preliminary drug screening found that seven of the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

“The syndicate used disguises such as vests and shirts bearing Telekom Malaysia logos, beacon lights and safety helmets to conceal their activities.

“Police also seized documents related to sales transactions and copies of bank receipts amounting to RM60,000.

“Additionally, cable and cable sheathing believed to belong to Telekom Malaysia were confiscated, along with tools such as cable cutters, an axe and a modified iron tool used to pry open maintenance manholes,” he said.

Comm Shazeli added that three more men, aged between 29 and 42, are still being sought.

He added that those arrested will be charged in court on Monday and Tuesday.
