BN sees need to rebrand to emerge more progressive, inclusive, says Zambry

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional will push to rebrand the coalition to emerge more progressive and inclusive in line with current public aspirations without abandoning the basis of its struggle and core values.

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the matter was in focus at the recent Barisan leadership retreat to strengthen unity, plan strategic measures forward and to bring all component parties together to face current political challenges.

The rebranding needed to be founded on balanced, moderate consensus-based politics, he added.

"Throughout the discussion session that took place openly and honestly, the leadership agreed to stress commitments to ensure unity, strengthen internal strength and ensure that Barisan remains relevant as the best choice in the country's dynamic and challenging political landscape.

"The Barisan leadership also agreed that political consolidation efforts need to be done in an organised, realistic manner and according to current political developments," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 1).

The retreat gathered together component party leaders from Umno, MCA, MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) and Parti Progresif Penduduk (PPP) as well as the Friends of BN president.

Zambry said the attendance of all major component party leaders reflected the strong spirit of togetherness and shared determination to continue to strengthen the coalition's strength, thus demonstrating the clear commitment that Barisan will remain an important foundation in Malaysian politics.

The coalition also agreed that all preparations needed to be done from now to face any possibilities, including the Melaka and Johor state elections, as well as the general election, he said.

Zambry added that the retreat also highlighted the joint concern towards the need to maintain the country's peace and stability, and that Barisan's stand on sensitive issues relating to race and religion was that they needed to be tackled through consensus, moderation and political wisdom, which are the traditions that form the strong core of the coalition.

He also reiterated that the Barisan leadership in the government will continue to carry out their duties with full responsibility, and play constructive roles in strengthening the stability and effectiveness of the Unity Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the people's well-being and the country's prosperity. - Bernama
