Cabinet has discussed proposal for RCI probe into Azam Baki share issue, says PM

KAJANG: The Cabinet has already discussed the proposal to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate Tan Sri Azam Baki over the share ownership issue, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"We have discussed it properly. We will issue a statement later," said the Prime Minister on Friday (Feb 27).

Previously, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong warned that if the government failed to take firm action against Azam, he and other MPs from the DAP could withdraw from the unity government.

Khoo said international media reports on the matter could undermine voter confidence in the government's credibility, particularly if no action was taken to address the issue.

He added that allowing the matter to remain unresolved could affect public perception and potentially lead voters to reject the current leadership in the next general election.

He made the remarks while debating the Auditor-General's Report 1/2026 in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Feb 24).

Meanwhile, when asked about allegations of a plot to topple the government and sabotage national stability, Anwar declined to comment further.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police had begun investigating the claims, which are believed to involve a prominent local figure and an international media agency.

He said the probe was initiated following a police report lodged on Thursday (Feb 26).

The case is being investigated by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit of the Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), Criminal Investigation Department, Bukit Aman, under Section 124B of the Penal Code for activities that are deemed prejudicial to parliamentary democracy.

Those found guilty face a jail term of up to 20 years.
