KUALA LUMPUR: Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir has urged for calm over an alleged incident involving a copy of the Quran at a university, as authorities investigate the matter.
“I would like to urge all parties to stay calm as this issue is being addressed. The police have already taken swift action, and the matter is now under investigation,” he told reporters at Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 25).
He said the university concerned had lodged a police report immediately after the incident surfaced.
“The police have acted promptly. The university also filed a report right away, and appropriate steps have been taken. We will first obtain a full report from the police to understand exactly what happened,” he said, adding that initial information had come mainly through social media.
Zambry said the government views the matter seriously, especially during the month of Ramadan.
“Actions that could affect religious sensitivities must be dealt with immediately. We also need to ensure the situation is not manipulated by any party in a way that could escalate tensions,” he said.
He added that such incidents could fuel division and should be resolved swiftly to safeguard social harmony.
The alleged incident came to public attention following a post on Threads depicting an individual’s foot on a Quran, prompting outrage.
Investigations are being carried out by the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
