Over 7,000 illegals nabbed


PETALING JAYA: More than 7,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested since the beginning of the year, the Immigration Dep­artment says.

Its deputy director-general (Operations) Datuk Lokman Effendi Ramli said that between Jan 1 and Feb 19, the department conducted 1,855 operations with 30,177 people being inspected.

“From this total, 7,043 illegal immigrants of various nationa­lities were arrested,” he said.

He added that 4,804 cases involved those without valid travel passes and documents, with a further 1,250 cases of overstaying.

The highest number of arrests were from Indonesia, Myan­mar, Bangladesh, the Philip­pines, Thai­land, Pakistan, India and China.
