One dead, two hurt after cargo lorry rams into tanker lorry in Sibu

SIBU: One man was killed while two others were injured after a cargo lorry rammed into the rear of an oil tanker lorry parked at the roadside along Jalan Batu 12 on Tuesday (Feb 24).

The Fire and Rescue Services Department said in a statement it received a distress call at 12.04am on the accident involving the two vehicles.

Firefighters from the Bintangor fire station were dispatched to the scene, with assistance from Sarikei fire station.

"The accident involved a fertiliser laden lorry that crashed into the back of a tanker lorry. Upon arrival, rescuers found two passengers trapped inside the cabin of the fertiliser lorry, while the driver had managed to extricate himself despite sustaining injuries," it said.

Rescue personnel initially faced difficulties in freeing the trapped victims due to the narrow and confined working space.

A lorry from Sarikei was called in to help pull the vehicle apart during the rescue operation.

Firefighters used a telescopic ram to pry open the wreckage and a cutter to remove the twisted metal parts trapping the victims.

The first victim, identified as Schwarznegger Samuel Numpang, 30, was conscious.

The second victim, Maxwell Bernard Empam, 22, sustained injuries and received medical attention.

However, the third victim, Stanley Ali, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

His body was later handed over to the police for further action.
