Extra RM200mil approved for construction of MMEA’s offshore patrol vessels, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: The cost of offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has now increased by an additional RM200mil, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said that the cost of the three OPVs, which was approved under the Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) of the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) in 2017 was RM740mil.

“There remains a balance of RM120mil from the original allocation, and the Economy Ministry has approved an additional project cost of RM200mil to complete the remaining construction works for OPV 2 and OPV 3 for the MMEA through the contract for the Procurement to Complete the Remaining Works of Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) 2 and OPV 3 for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency,” he said in a written parliamentary reply dated Tuesday (Jan 24).

This approval brings the current total cost for the construction of the three OPVs to RM940mil,” he added.

Previously the government had signed an agreement with THHE Destini in 2017 to supply three OPVs to the MMEA.

The MMEA has received only one vessel so far which is the KM Tun Fatimah.

The vessels were initially scheduled for delivery in 2022.
