Mother of four fined RM2,500 for prostitution-related offence in Melaka

MELAKA: A mother of four was fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh after she pleaded guilty to engaging in prostitution-related activities at a hotel here.

The accused, Azwana Sulaiman, 46, entered the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani on Monday (Feb 16).

According to the charge, she was found soliciting for the purpose of prostitution at a hotel and residences in Jalan Persisiran Bunga Raya, in the Melaka Tengah district, at about 8.05pm on Feb 12.

She was charged under Section 372B of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to one year, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Shauki Mardia Baharudin sought an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent.

The accused’s lawyer, Nigel Tai, appealed for a lenient penalty on the grounds that the mother of four works only as a restaurant waitress.

Tai added that his client also supports two children who are still in college and awaiting their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results.

The court ordered the accused to pay a fine of RM2,500, or serve four months’ imprisonment in default.

The accused paid the fine.
