Four arrested in raid on gambling, cockfighting den in S'wak

MUKAH: Four men have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in illegal cockfighting and gambling in Selangau's Pelugau area.

Mukah OCPD Deputy Supt Muhammad Rizal Alias said police raided an open area around 3.30pm on Sunday (Feb 15) after receiving information about suspected gambling activities there.

"We came across a group of men gambling and staging cockfights. They tried to escape, but we arrested four local men aged 42 to 57," he said in a statement on Monday (Feb 16).

He said police also seized several items believed to be linked to the activities, including four live and two dead cockerels, a weighing scale, a table, five plastic chairs, a "holo" gambling cloth sheet, a "holo kong" gambling set, three dice, a whiteboard and RM200 in cash.

"The suspects tested negative for drugs," he added.

DSP Rizal said the case is being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999 and Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

He also advised the public not to engage in illegal gambling.

"Besides the risk of arrest and prosecution, gambling can also lead to financial and social problems," he added.
