Melaka cops to monitor 17 congestion, accident-prone areas for CNY

MELAKA: Melaka police will step up surveillance at 10 hotspots (congestion-prone areas) and seven blackspots (accident-prone areas) throughout Ops Selamat 25 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

State police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said these involved federal roads, state roads and city roads, including Jalan Krubong, Lebuh AMJ (Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin) and several locations along the North-South Expressway (PLUS).

He added that there has been an increase in accident cases this year, especially along the federal roads and the PLUS highway, compared to last year, adding that in Melaka, the highway spans nearly 50km, from Simpang Ampat in Alor Gajah to Jasin.

"These accidents are not only due to human negligence, but also due to imperfect or uneven road conditions," he said after launching the operation, which was also attended by Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) mayor Datuk Shadan Othman at Dataran MBMB here on Thursday (Feb 12).

Meanwhile, he also expects the number of vehicles entering Melaka during the Chinese New Year holiday period to increase by 66% to 318,000 vehicles, compared to 105,000 vehicles on normal days.

He also advised Melaka folks planning to leave their homes during the Chinese New Year period to notify the police via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application or contact the nearest police station.

He said that, so far, 80,000 users in the state have registered via the VSP app. - Bernama
