VETERAN Hong Kong filmmaker Clifton Ko Chi Sum has announced plans for his 2028 Chinese New Year film, tentatively titled Bak Kut Teh.
Sin Chew Daily reported that filming is scheduled to begin next March, ahead of its release during the 2028 Chinese New Year period.
The film will continue the director’s trademark “everyman comedy” approach, with stories rooted in everyday life while blending humour, entertainment and social observations.
Using bak kut teh, a dish strongly associated with Malaysian food culture, as its central theme, the film will portray the country’s unique social and cultural landscape.
It will also explore the preservation, evolution and innovation of traditional food culture in modern society.
According to the daily, Malaysian businessman Datuk Wong Siew Meng will serve as producer and executive producer and will also appear in the film.
Further details about the production and cast will be announced in due course, the daily reported.
Ko said the film would pay tribute to Chicken and Duck Talk, his 1988 Hong Kong comedy classic about the rivalry between a traditional roast-duck restaurant and a modern fast-food outlet.

Ke Xin donated his heart, liver, kidneys and corneas after his mother, known only as An, consented to organ donation on Monday, China Press reported.
His liver was divided into two portions to save an adult and a four-year-old child, while his heart, kidneys and corneas were also donated.
Medical reports indicated that Ke had been in good health and that his organs were in good condition.
Reports revealed Ke was An’s only child. His biological father died when he was just over a year old, and she raised him alone.
On Aug 18, he was involved in a traffic accident.
Doctors made several attempts to save him but were unable to do so.
Amid her grief, An decided to proceed with the organ donation in accordance with her son’s wishes.
