Six-year-old girl perishes in Tambunan house fire

KOTA KINABALU: Fire and Rescue Department personnel discovered the charred remains of a child in a burning house in Tambunan early Tuesday morning (Feb 10).

Tambunan Fire and Rescue Station chief Mitchell Francis George said the body was found in what was believed to be a room after firefighters brought the blaze under control.

He said a distress call about the fire was received at 4.08am, and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene.

“There were two victims involved in the incident. One was a 31-year-old woman who suffered burns while escaping the house, and the other was a six-year-old girl whose remains were found inside,” he said.

Mitchell said the fire damaged two houses and three vehicles, adding that the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

The injured woman was taken to hospital for treatment, while the deceased’s remains were handed over to the police for further action.

Firefighters wrapped up operations at about 7am after conducting checks for safety hazards.
