False fatherhood claim leads to arrest in MyKad application scam

KOTA KINABALU: A man claiming to be a father to three MyKad applicants was arrested by the Sabah National Registration Department (NRD) after the supporting documents were found to be fake.

According to Sabah NRD, the man was arrested after discrepancies were found in the supporting documents and registration records, raising doubts about the validity of the applications for three identity cards.

According to a statement posted on the agency’s official Facebook account on Tuesday (Feb 10), the man was arrested at 11am on Feb 4 at the Sabah NRD office in Kota Kinabalu.

Sabah NRD believes that the suspect was acting as an organiser or guarantor in the applications for identity card documents.

The agency said the man submitted false information by claiming to be the father of the individuals applying for identity cards.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 25(1)(b) of the Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which provides for imprisonment of up to three years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

Sabah NRD said it was committed to ensuring the integrity of the national registration system remains protected and free from misuse or identity fraud attempts.

It added that firm and uncompromising action will be taken against any individual who attempts to provide false information or use invalid documents in matters related to identity cards and citizenship registration.
