Eight college students remanded, suspended from studies over alleged assault, says Melaka exco man

MELAKA: Eight vocational college students here who allegedly assaulted a fellow college mate have been remanded and suspended from their studies, said Datuk Rahmad Mariman.

The Melaka Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs committee chairman said all disciplinary action and investigations are currently under the purview of the Education Ministry (MOE).

“I can confirm the incident occurred and was believed to have stemmed from dissatisfaction towards the victim.

"All actions at this stage come under MOE as the case involves a college while the Melaka Education Department is only providing guidance in terms of procedural action,” he said when contacted on Monday (Feb 9).

Earlier, a student from the college was believed to have been attacked by a group of students after allegedly cutting the line during mealtime.

It's understood that the victim’s father had lodged a report at Alor Gajah police headquarters and the case is now under investigation.

Rahmad said the maximum suspension period imposed on all those involved is two weeks.

“No expulsion of these students so far. However, some students involved have applied for a transfer to another institution and the matter is subject to approval by MOE's Technical and Vocational Education and Training Division,” he added.
