KOTA KINABALU: A three-day carnival held here ahead of Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not merely a combination of festive celebrations but a manifestation of mutual respect, togetherness and affection that has long been part of the way of life for the people of Sabah, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

"It is this harmony that makes Sabah a peaceful, stable and exemplary state, where people of various ethnicities and beliefs live together in an atmosphere of mutual understanding," he said at the event here on Saturday (Feb 7).

The event, which started on Feb 6, aims to celebrate unity, cultural diversity and harmonious living while positioning Sabah as a model of multicultural harmony to increase its visibility within the Asean region.

The organisers and 600 participants created the "Kongsi Raya Muhibbah Yee Sang", which is 1,500m long and has earned a place in the Asean Records.

Commenting on the longest Yee Sang, Hajiji said it was not just a physical achievement but carried a much deeper meaning for the people and the state of Sabah.

"It is a symbol of the unity of the people of Sabah, comprising various ethnicities, cultures and beliefs, united in a single intention and purpose to build and develop our beloved state of Sabah together.

"May this event foster a spirit of cooperation and mutual assistance involving all parties, whether the government, non-governmental organisations, the private sector, entrepreneurs or the public.

"With the spirit of mutual respect and trust as the main pillar, this relationship makes Asean an important strategic partner for the state of Sabah in tourism, trade and investment," Hajiji said in his speech read by assistant minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun.
