Cops bust 'Boy Arau' gang, four nabbed after high-stakes car chase, shootout

ARAU: Police have busted "Geng Boy Arau" after arresting four individuals, including a woman, suspected of involvement in four housebreaking cases and the theft of a car in Perlis throughout January and early February.

Arau OCPD Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the suspects, aged between 28 and 47 years old, were detained in Alor Setar, Kedah, and around the district over the past two days.

The suspected mastermind, a 47-year-old cafe worker at a public university in Arau, was caught at Jalan Santan, Kangar, at about noon on Thursday (Feb 5) after initially escaping a police dragnet the night before.

The incident began at 7.50pm when police arrested a male suspect by the roadside in Alor Setar, which led the team to raid the university cafe at 10.30pm.

Although the mastermind was not there during the initial search, he drove into the cafe area in a MPV as police were preparing to leave. When officers moved to intercept the vehicle, the suspect became aggressive and attempted to ram them.

Police fired several shots in self-defence at the vehicle’s front tyres. Despite a blown tyre, the suspect drove another 4km to Taman Bersatu before the vehicle ground to a halt.

One man was detained from the car, but the mastermind fled into the undergrowth and evaded capture until he was tracked down on Thursday.

Investigations revealed that one of the detainees, a 31-year-old woman, was the cafe worker’s wife. A search of their home in Kangar uncovered several items believed to be stolen.

The mastermind had 12 prior drug offences and 12 other criminal offences.

With the arrests, police cleared multiple cases reported between Jan 25 and Feb 2 involving total losses estimated at RM30,000. The mastermind was set to be remanded Friday (Feb 6), while the other three suspects had already been remanded for up to seven days.

The case is being investigated for attempted murder, obstructing a public servant, housebreaking and motor vehicle theft. – Bernama
