KOTA KINABALU: Two teenagers had to learn the hard way when they joked around by damaging a signage pole along a road in interior Sabah and were later detained in the police lockup for investigations.

The boys, aged 17 and 19, were said to have been travelling along the Sinaron-Tongod road when they stopped to joke around, tugged and pulled at a road sign, while another of their friends started recording their actions.

“The action of damaging the signage was uploaded on various social media platforms at around midnight,” said Keningau OCPD Supt Yampil Anak Garai in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 4).

He said the video of the Feb 2 incident was widely circulated, causing many netizens to criticise their actions.

When arrested, the boys said they were just fooling around and started doing the action when they saw their friend recording, he said.

Supt Yampil said the boys were subsequently remanded for three days to facilitate probes under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing losses.

“The police take such actions seriously and will not compromise with any form of rule-breaking,” he said, warning the public from getting involved in any sort of actions that could disrupt public peace.

He also urged the public to report any incidents to the police for fast action.
