IPOH: A kuih seller was fined a total of RM11,800 by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to running amok and injuring two workers at an eatery last month.
Nurfarahanim Soaid, 29, pleaded guilty to three charges involving voluntarily causing hurt and mischief at a restaurant in Taman Tasek Damai.
For the first charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, Nurfarahanim was fined RM1,800 for slapping and punching a male counter staff, Mohamed Hussain Mubarakali.
The incident occurred at approximately 6.26am on Jan 28 after the accused became aggressive during a payment dispute.
Nurfarahanim, who was unrepresented for this charge, pleaded for leniency, stating she has suffered from bipolar disorder since 2021 and is a single mother of three.
Magistrate Anis Hanini Abdullah imposed the fine with a default sentence of two months' imprisonment.
In a separate courtroom before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan, the accused faced two further charges under Section 324 and Section 427 of the Penal Code.
The court heard that the accused ran amok and threw food after being told she could not make a payment via bank transfer.
During the commotion, she used a fork to cause a soft tissue injury to the chest of another worker, Muniasamy Rathinavel Nadar.
She was also charged with mischief for breaking three glass food display panels, resulting in property damage.
Defence lawyer Robert S. Gnanarajan appealed for a lower fine, citing his client's low monthly income of RM500 and a language barrier between her and the staff.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor S. Nishaalini urged for a heavy sentence, noting CCTV footage showed the accused using a fork and a meat cleaver to smash the panels.
The prosecution stated the restaurant suffered estimated losses of RM45,000, including cleaning costs and property damage.
The magistrate fined her RM6,000 for the assault with a weapon and RM4,000 for the mischief, with default jail terms of 12 months and 10 months respectively.
