MELAKA: The historic streets of Jonker Walk here have been transformed into a glowing spectacle, with a record 2,026 lanterns lighting up the iconic enclave to usher in the "Year of the Horse".
Marking the 36th anniversary of the city’s Lunar New Year decoration tradition, chairman of the Jonker Walk Management Committee Datuk Gan Tian Loo said the initiative has been a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike.
"These vibrant lanterns and festive decorations don't only illuminate Jonker Walk but also extend into its charming back alleys, creating an immersive Lunar New Year experience for all who visit,” he said in an interview here on Wednesday (Feb 4).
Gan said the decorations, which symbolise unity, prosperity and cultural continuity in the historic city, will be officially launched on Friday (Feb 6).
He added that close to RM1mil was spent on the festive display, which was fully funded through private contributions.
"The aim is to bring back the atmosphere of celebrating Chinese New Year as it was in the good old days, while ensuring the celebrations remain dazzling and memorable in this historic city.
"These lanterns symbolise power, wisdom and good fortune, values we hope will resonate with all Melakans and visitors during the Lunar New Year,” he said.
Gan said a striking 5.49m-tall horse replica has also been installed at the gateway of Jonker Walk near Tan Kim Seng Bridge here, serving as a focal point for the festivities and a popular photo spot for visitors.
He said various horse replicas would also be showcased across the World Heritage Site, while lanterns have been installed along all entry points into Jonker Walk, enhancing the festive ambience throughout the area.
He expressed confidence that the elaborate decorations would attract revellers from across the country and abroad, particularly from China, to celebrate the Lunar New Year in the historic city.
