Flash floods hit parts of Lahad Datu following hours of heavy rain

LAHAD DATU: Several areas in Lahad Datu were hit by flash floods after continuous heavy rain since Wednesday (Feb 4) afternoon, disrupting traffic and damaging property in low-lying neighbourhoods.

On social media, the situation appeared serious, with videos and photos showing vehicles being swept away by strong currents, along with a wooden stilt house reportedly carried off by floodwaters.

Among the affected locations were Fajar Centre, Jalan Segama Lama, Kampung Batu 1, Kampung Batu 2, Bandar Tabanak, Kampung Tabanak, parts of the town centre, Jalan Singgamata, Kampung Pisang, Kampung Pancuran, Dam Road, Palm Garden, Palm Heights Residence and Jalan Tengah Nipah.

The downpour began at about 1pm, with floodwaters rising rapidly around 3pm. By 3.40pm, Jalan Singgamata was reported to be impassable to smaller vehicles due to high water levels.

Residents said flash floods have become a recurring problem whenever heavy rain persists, blaming poor drainage systems for the worsening situation.

Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station chief Sumsoa Rashid said that as of 3.40pm, no official reports had been received.

“However, our personnel have been deployed to affected areas to monitor the situation and ensure residents’ safety,” he said.

The public has been advised to remain cautious and avoid flood-prone areas during prolonged rainfall.
