Elderly fisherman found dead off Kota Tinggi shoreline

KOTA TINGGI: The body of an elderly man was found along the shoreline here after he was believed to have drowned while fishing at sea.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said they received information from a member of the public who found a boat stranded on the beach near the Batu Teluk Ramunia Jetty on Monday (Feb 2).

“Personal documents, including the identity card of a 77-year-old local man, were found inside a plastic bag tied to the boat.

“A team of police from the Bayu Damai police station was deployed to the scene to verify the incident and trace the owner of the identity card found,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 3).

He added that the victim’s child had confirmed his father had gone out to sea to fish and had not returned.

“A police report regarding the missing victim was lodged by his child.

“A search and rescue operation was carried out by the Sungai Rengit Fire and Rescue Station with the assistance of the local community, and the victim was later found unconscious on the same day, about 200m from the shoreline.

“The victim was confirmed dead by a medical officer,” he said, adding that the body was then taken to the Kota Tinggi Hospital forensic unit for further investigation.

The case has been classified as a sudden death report.
