Two killed in blaze at workers’ quarters on Jalan Nyigu


BINTULU: Two people, including a 15-year-old boy, were killed when a fire destroyed a two-storey workers’ quarters on Jalan Nyigu here in the early hours of Monday (Feb 2).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 1.01am and rushed to the scene.

The operations commander reported that the blaze had engulfed a non-permanent two-storey workers’ block with 28 rooms.

"The structure was completely destroyed in the blaze," the department said in a statement on Monday.

The fire also spread to four motorcycles parked at the premises. Three were completely burnt, while the other sustained partial damage.

Initial information indicated that several occupants were believed to have been trapped when the fire broke out.

At about 4.22am, firefighters discovered the bodies of two victims at the scene.

"Both were confirmed dead at the scene and later handed over to the police for further investigation," the statement added.

The victims were identified as Taun Nyaring, a 61-year-old woman, and Melbourne Anak Jeasy, a 15-year-old boy.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
