DUNGUN: A male tapir has died after being hit by a car near Kampung Santong.

Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Loo Kean Seong said the 300kg tapir was struck while crossing the road at KM8, Jalan Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah-Paka en route to the nearby forest, at around 10pm on Saturday.

“An examination revealed signs of injury on the tapir’s head and body,” he said when contacted by Bernama yesterday.

He added that Perhilitan had taken the tapir’s carcass for proper disposal.

It is understood that the tapir was hit by a Volkswagen driven by a 49-year-old teacher.

In a similar incident on Jan 24, a 200kg tapir was hit by a motorcycle at KM320.5 of the East Coast Expressway 2 after exiting Kerteh, Kemaman, at around 1am.

The 19-year-old motorcyclist also died at the scene.
