RM350mil allocated to upgrade East-West Highway, says Nanta

GERIK: The government has allocated RM350mil to upgrade the East-West Highway (JRTB), specifically the section in Perak or route FT004 under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to make the route safer, more comfortable and resilient.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said preliminary work for the project under 13MP’s First Rolling Plan (RP1) could commence this year, and he hoped that some of it could be physically implemented next year.

"Out of the RM350mil, we will use RM170mil for 17 locations, with RM10mil per location to widen the roads into overtaking lanes. So, 17 locations have been identified, which will help ensure the safety and comfort of road users later.

"That is our plan and the financial allocation that we have received, and we will definitely apply for additional funds if there's a need," he said at a press conference during a visit to the JRTB (FT004), including the site of the bus accident involving students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) on June 9.

Meanwhile, Nanta said that around RM40mil has been allocated for maintenance work on the highway, covering the section in Perak throughout this year, as a step to improve the safety and comfort levels of road users.

According to Nanta, the allocation involves the implementation of various maintenance works by the Public Works Department and concession companies, including road surface repairs, installation of safety facilities and lighting improvements.

"Therefore, we have RM40mil or a bit more for maintenance work, which is indeed being carried out through the concession company here, namely Belati Wangsa Sdn Bhd," he also said.

At the same time, he added that the Works Ministry always monitors the condition and needs of the route in case any improvements are needed to provide comfort and ensure the safety of road users.

On June 9, 2025, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were travelling in from Jerteh, Terengganu to UPSI Tanjong Malim Campus, Perak was involved in an accident with a hatchback at KM53 of the East-West Highway (Jeli-Gerik), Perak.

Of that number, 13 victims died at the scene, whereas two others died while receiving treatment at the hospital. - Bernama
