GOMBAK: Police have confirmed they are investigating businessman Albert Tei over alleged defamatory remarks against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the individual had recently been called to Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit to assist the probe.
He said the investigation was initiated following the individual’s recent statements and actions, which police deemed defamatory toward the MACC Chief Commissioner.
“The individual was called in to give a statement in relation to the remarks made, and police have recorded his statement,” he said.
Mohd Khalid added that the investigation paper would be completed before being submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further action.
He said this at a press conference held in conjunction with a community policing programme and the Inspector-General of Police’s visit to the Royal Malaysia Police’s “Thaneer Panthal” initiative at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, here on Sunday (Feb 1).
On Jan 29, it was reported that Tei had been called to Bukit Aman to assist investigations into the alleged misuse of network facilities and defamation following the circulation of a video recording.
The recording had previously been linked to investigations that led to corruption charges against a former senior political secretary.
Tei was also quoted as confirming that he was under investigation in connection with a recording showing him with a woman identified as Sofia Rini Buyong.
He had also questioned the authorities over the delay in returning closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from his residence, which had been seized during an earlier raid.
