Mitra back under human resources oversight

THE Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has once again been transferred back to the Human Resources Ministry, Malaysia Nanban reported.

This was announced by Datuk Seri R. Ramanan who now heads the ministry after a Cabinet shuffle in December.

This marks the eighth change in the agency’s oversight in the last 18 years since its formation.

The agency was initially set up as a Cabinet Committee on Indian Participation in Government Programme and Projects in 2008.

Four units formed under the committee in 2014 were merged as Socioeconomic Development of Indian Community (Sedic) in 2017, and rebranded to Mitra the following year.

Mitra was placed under the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM), then seconded to the Unity Ministry before reverting to JPM.

Ramanan assured that Mitra will not waver from its focus to serve the Indian community.

Moving forward, the agency will publish details of all its programmes on its website in the interest of transparency.
