Drug addict nabbed for breaking into temple donation box


KULAI: A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from a Hindu temple donation box.
Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the incident, which took place at a temple in Senai, was reported on Jan 19.
“We identified a closed-circuit television footage, showing a man believed to be the suspect, seemingly breaking open the donation box to steal money.
“The suspect was arrested at his home in Bandar Putra at around 5pm on Wednesday (Jan 28).
“He tested positive for methamphetamine and has 31 priors on his criminal record,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 29).
Police also seized his bag and tools such as a knife, chainsaw, test pen, headlamp and a mobile phone, he added.
ACP Tan said the suspect has been placed under remand for four days until Feb 1 to assist in the investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
If convicted, offenders face a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine for the first offence, and repeat offenders could be punished with imprisonment and a fine or caning.
