Men plead not guilty to robbery, rape charges

KLANG: Two men claimed trial at the Sessions Court here for posing as police officers and robbing a woman, while one of them was also charged with raping her.

Friends R. Sathiyaseelan, 32, and M. Balaraj, 34, denied robbing the 37-year-old woman at a parking lot at Jalan Kapar here about 2am on Jan 8.

The victim, a clerk, had a cellphone and RM110 in cash in her handbag.

P-hailing driver Sathiyaseelan also denied that he had raped the victim at the same time and location.

He faces a jail term of up to 30 years and whipping for the alleged rape.

For the alleged robbery, both Sathiyaseelan and Balaraj face a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping.

The charges were read to both the accused in Tamil before judge Sharifah Hascindie Syed Omar.

In a separate court before magis­trate A. Karthiyayini, they were also charged with impersonating police officers. They face a jail term of up to two years, or a fine or both.

The court set bail at RM20,000 for Sathiyaseelan for all three charges against him and RM10,000 for Balaraj with one surety each.

They were ordered to report to their nearest police station once a month and not disturb the victim, as well as prosecution witnesses.

All three cases were set to be mentioned on March 5.
