Melaka braces for influx of 300,000 vehicles for Aidiladha, school holidays

MELAKA: Melaka is bracing for the influx of more than 300,000 vehicles during the Aidiladha holidays and school break, which is set to give the state a significant boost in tourist arrivals.

State Senior Exco for Housing, Local Government, Climate Change and Disaster Management, Datuk Rais Yasin, said local authorities are prepared to ensure visitor safety, cleanliness and comfort are at the highest levels.

"All local councils have been ordered to step up and be fully prepared for the surge in visitors, especially in tourist hotspots and public areas.

"We have instructed them to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure visitors remain safe and comfortable," he told reporters after the Qurban programme at the Terendak Camp Masjid As-Syuhada, Sungai Udang, on Wednesday (May 27).

Also present was the 3rd Division Malaysian Infantry Commander, Major General Sani S Omar.

Rais said the key hotspots expected to draw crowds during the Aidiladha and school holidays include Bandar Hilir, Ayer Keroh, and Pantai Tanjung Bidara, a long-time festive favourite.

He added that Tasik Cincin in Jasin, the state's newest tourism attraction, is also set to pull in visitors, giving Melaka's tourism sector an extra boost over the holiday period.

Rais also reminded those heading home for the holidays to secure their houses before leaving and to alert neighbours, who play a vital role in keeping watch over empty homes during the festive season.

The state government, through local authorities, remains on standby for any eventuality, including disasters, said Rais. So far, the situation in Melaka is under control.

Earlier, he and the 3rd Division Commander performed the Aidiladha prayers, then took part in a symbolic Qurban ceremony at the mosque involving 14 cows donated by various parties, including the public. - Bernama
