KOTA TINGGI: Police have arrested five people after a pawnshop manager in Sungai Rengit here discovered that a gold bracelet offered to her was fake.
Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said police received a report from the local woman, who manages a pawnshop, at about 1.58pm on Tuesday (Sept 29).
He said the woman had received a gold bracelet weighing about 23g from one of the suspects.
“However, an inspection found that the bracelet was fake,” he said here on Wednesday (Sept 30).
Acting on the information, police arrested five suspects aged between 34 and 62 years old.
Supt Yusof said the group comprised three local men, one local woman and a foreign woman. He added that an investigation paper had been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
He added that further checks also found that one of the suspects had a previous record involving the sale of fake gold in Alor Setar, Kedah.
“Two other suspects were found to have previous criminal records involving narcotics offences,” he said.
Supt Yusof said police believed the arrests could assist investigations into several cases involving the pawning or sale of fake gold reported in the district.
The five suspects were brought before the Pengerang Magistrate’s Court to apply for a remand order under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court granted a three-day remand order from Wednesday (Sept 30) until Friday (Oct 2) to facilitate further investigation.
Supt Yusof urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist police in completing the investigation.
