KUALA LUMPUR: Former Army chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to four counts of receiving proceeds from illegal activities amounting to RM2.1mil.

The 58-year-old pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out to him before Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi yesterday.

“Saya mohon dibicarakan (I claim trial),” he said.

According to the charge sheets, Muhammad Hafizuddeain received RM969,000, RM474,850, RM488,550 and RM190,000 – which were deposited into three bank accounts under his name.

The offences were allegedly committed at the Bank Muamalat main branch at Jalan Melaka, Menara Maybank and Maybank Bukit Damansara between Feb 2, 2024 and Nov 7, 2025.

Muhammad Hafizuddeain is accused of four counts under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities 2001.

He is facing imprisonment of up to 15 years and a fine of no less than five times the amount of gratification, or RM5mil, whichever is higher, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin asked the court to impose a RM300,000 bail in two sureties.

He also asked the court to impose additional bail conditions whereby the accused must report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters each month and to surrender his passport pending the disposal of the case.

Lawyer Aizul Rohan Anuar sought a lower bail amount of RM100,000.

He said his client served in the army for more than 40 years and has retired.

“He is a retiree and earns a RM15,000 pension. All of his accounts have been frozen.

“If the bail amount is too high, this goes against the presumption of innocence,” Aizul said.

The lawyer asked the court to consider his client’s service to the country, where Hafizuddeain once served in Bosnia.

“My client’s wife is here and she will be charged today as well. He will be the one responsible for the wife’s bail,” Aizul added.

The court fixed bail at RM250,000 in two sureties.

At a separate Sessions Court, Muhammad Hafizuddeain’s third wife claimed trial to four counts of receiving proceeds from illegal activities, amounting to RM77,000.

Salwani Anuar @ Kamaruddin, 27, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before judge Rosli Ahmad.

Salwani, who wore a black robe and shawl, was allowed to sit down in the dock after the court was told that she suffered from a chronic boil on her thigh.

According to the charge sheets, Salwani, who was charged in her capacity as the controller of a company, Wany Venture, received proceeds from illegal activities – RM50,000, RM7,000, RM10,000 and RM10,000 – that were deposited into the company’s bank account.

The offences were allegedly committed at CIMB Bukit Damansara between Nov 24, 2024 and Nov 25, 2025.

Salwani was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities 2001.

She faces a maximum 15 years in prison and a fine of no less than five times the amount of illegal proceeds, or RM5mil, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

DPP Wan Shaharuddin offered bail of between RM30,000 and RM50,000 in two sureties.

“The amount offered is not punitive. We also seek additional bail conditions where the accused must report her attendance to the Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission branch every month and surrender her passport to the court,” he said.

Lawyer Fahmi Moin sought a lower bail amount of RM20,000.

“My client got married in August last year and does not have any children. She is a housewife who does online business with no stable income and has her husband to support her.

“Both her elderly parents are in Besut, Terengganu, and she supports them,” Fahmi said.

The judge fixed bail at RM30,000 in two sureties. Both cases are set for mention on March 30.
