KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,200 murder cases were recorded between 2021 to 2025 according to figures revealed by the Home Ministry. The ministry told the Dewan Rakyat that 239 cases were recorded in 2021 followed by 241 in 2022, 262 in 2023, 237 in 2024 and 248 in 2025.
"There was no drastic increase in the number of murders, contrary to the perceptions of several quarters. However the police will always take preventive measures in accordance with the law to curb murders," it said in a written reply on Jan 22.
Among the measures taken include increasing omnipresence through mobile patrol vehicles and motorcycle patrols. These patrols will also see officers interact with local communities. The ministry added that technological developments are also being used as a preventive measure.
This includes the use of the Smart City Management System to monitor the effectiveness of the Safe Cities programme in turning crimes within areas governed by local councils.
"Volunteer Smartphone Patrols are also used alongside the installation of closed circuit television systems by local councils in hotspots and public areas," the ministry said.
It also noted collaborations together with Rukun Tetangga communities, programmes together with local communities alongside the appointment of school liaison officers. The ministry was responding to a question by Datuk Azman Nasrudin of Perikatan Nasional, who asked if the ministry is taking any drastic measures to curb the seemingly rampant state of murders.
