KINABATANGAN: Final preparations for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections entered a crucial phase on Thursday (Jan 22) as polling equipment began to be distributed to voting centres across the constituency.
Election Commission (EC) Commissioner Datuk Sapdin Ibrahim said the collection and distribution of voting materials were progressing smoothly ahead of polling day on Saturday (Jan 24).
“We have divided the preparations into three zones. For the parliamentary seat and the Lamag constituency, operations are centred at Dewan Sri Lamag. Sukau is coordinated from the Kinabatangan District Education Office, while Kuamut is handled from the Tongod District Office,” he told reporters after inspecting preparations at Dewan Sri Lamag.
Datuk Sapdin said a total of 36 polling centres involving 117 voting streams will be in operation on polling day, covering urban, rural and interior areas within the constituency.
Also present was EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus.
A total of 48,526 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election, while 13,703 voters are registered for the Lamag state seat contest.
The Kinabatangan parliamentary seat will see a three-cornered fight between Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar of Barisan Nasional, Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman of Warisan and independent candidate Goldam Hamid.
Meanwhile, the Lamag state seat is a straight contest between Mohd Ismail Ayob of Barisan Nasional and Mazliwati Abdul Malek of Warisan.
The by-elections were called following the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5.
