Nearly RM1mil worth of drugs seized by Sibu police in 2025

SIBU: Police here have achieved a major victory against drug trafficking and abuse in 2025, with operations netting RM924,764 in seizures.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the figure marked a sharp increase compared with RM175,946 in 2024.

He said the number of arrests also rose to 1,471 from 1,103 in 2024, with 1,040 of those detained identified as drug addicts.

"Congratulations and well done to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department for its encouraging performance through arrests, seizures and enforcement action against traffickers and drug users.

"This success not only protects the community from the threat of drugs, but also contributes to social well-being and the safety of future generations,” he said in his address at the Sibu district police headquarters monthly assembly on Tuesday (Jan 20).

Meanwhile, ACP Zulkipli said the district recorded an alarming increase in commercial crime cases last year, which should not be taken lightly.

According to him, total losses from commercial crime in 2025 amounted to RM20.34 million, with the highest losses involving investment scam cases totalling RM9.55 million, followed by e-purchase scams and fake job offers.

"This situation is a ‘red flag’ that must not be taken lightly. The public needs to remain vigilant to avoid becoming victims of scams,” he said.

He said 59 operations to curb illegal street racing were carried out throughout last year, resulting in 1,607 summonses issued and 21 arrests, with those detained charged in court under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987. – Bernama
