Former firing ranges identified as sites of SASaR housing projects, says Defence Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Several areas formerly used for firing ranges have been identified to be developed for additional One Member, One Home (SASaR) housing projects.

The Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, at a press conference at the housing project key handover ceremony on Monday (Jan 19), said that many of these lands are surrounded by public housing developments, which have made them unsuitable for firing ranges.

“Rather than allowing land owned by the Armed Forces to fall into the hands of others, it is more appropriate for us to convert it into SASaR housing projects so that more personnel have the opportunity to buy homes.

“So far, we have identified suitable land, about two or three sites. There won’t be too many because we are not the Housing Ministry, but we will consider them based on suitability,” he said

He added that housing project development is important to help military and Defence Ministry personal acquire affordable housing at lower than market rate prices.

“The house prices under this project are all offered at affordable rates of around RM150,000 to RM250,000, far cheaper than market prices. Without this intervention, it would be impossible for our personnel to have the opportunity to buy a home,” he said.

He also said that additional projects are being developed in the Kuala Lumpur area, specifically at the Kem Wardieburn and Setapak areas.
