PJ man arrested after video of child abuse goes viral

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a 38-year-old local man here after a video of him physically abusing children went viral on social media.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shamsulmuddin Mamat confirmed that a police report was lodged on Saturday (Jan 17) at around 1.21pm regarding the incident.

“Investigation found that the incident happened at a house in Petaling Jaya, where the suspect in this case was the children’s own uncle. The children were aged eight to 11.

“The incident was believed to have been triggered by the children's defiance of the suspect's mother, who is at the same location," he said in a statement here on Sunday (Jan 18).

ACP Shamsulmuddin added that the 35-second video showed the suspect whipping the children with a rotan and throwing a chair at them.

He said that, based on this information, police arrested the suspect and seized several items to assist in the investigation. He was also remanded for 2 days.

"The case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act. A remand application for the suspect will be made at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court today," he said.

ACP Shamsulmuddin urged those with information to come forward to the nearest police station or contact the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters at 03-79662222, or the investigating officer, Insp Irfan Emir Mohd Alwi, at 016-5379507.
