World War II bomb found at construction site

Cordoned off: Policemen from the Weapons Unit of Jasin police headquarters inspecting the aerial bomb discovered at a construction site.

JASIN: A 227kg aerial bomb believed to date back to the Second World War was uncovered at a construction site.

The discovery came about when a 52-year-old worker was carrying out earthworks at a project site in Kampung Air Panas in Bemban here.

He came across an object suspected to be a bomb, said Jasin OCPD Supt Lee Robert.

A team from the Weapons Unit was deployed to the location at 3pm on Wednesday after a call was made to the Bemban police station.

“The bomb measures between 27cm and 36cm in circumference and is about 45 inches (114cm) in length.

“Further examination found that it remains active. It is in a corroded condition,” he said yesterday.

Supt Lee said the bomb would be detonated in accordance with standard operating procedure to ensure the safety of the public and the surrounding areas.
