Marine police seize RM211,000 worth of fireworks in Juru


GEORGE TOWN: Marine Police Region I seized various fireworks worth more than RM100,000 in Juru on Tuesday (Jan 13).

Acting Commander of Marine Police Region I Supt Fakharuddin Amri Sanusi said the contraband items were seized during an inter-department operation with central Seberang Perai police at the Juru R&R stop (northbound) at about 3.20pm.

“Based on information from the public, a police team raided a bonded truck park at the R&R area and found several large boxes believed to contain contraband fireworks,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 14).

During the raid, police detained a 56-year-old man after he failed to produce any valid licence or permit for the storage of explosives.

He said that during the operation, authorities seized 206 boxes of various types of firecrackers and fireworks valued at RM131,650, as well as a five-tonne bonded lorry estimated to be worth RM80,000.

The total value of the seizure is about RM211,650.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 for possession, storage or control of explosives without valid authorisation.
