Cabinet satisfied with Defence Minister's briefing on Armed Forces issues, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet is satisfied with Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin’s briefing on the slew of issues involving the Armed Forces recently, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the first Cabinet meeting this year on Wednesday (Jan 14) saw Khaled briefing ministers on recent controversies.

"The Prime Minister took note of the views presented in the meeting and the statement made by Khaled on Tuesday (Jan 13).

"Follow-up action will be taken, and the explanation given by Khaled was well-received by the Cabinet," Fahimi told the weekly post-Cabinet meeting press conference.

Recently, the Armed Forces were thrust into the spotlight after, among other things, news reports claimed that mid-ranking Royal Malaysian Air Force officers organised "immoral parties" inside an airbase in Subang recently.

On Jan 8, former Army chief Jeneral Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan was remanded for seven days, while his two wives were remanded for six and three days respectively, to assist in investigations into alleged corruption involving procurement tenders.

After his remand, Hafizuddeain submitted a letter on Monday (Jan 12) seeking early retirement effective Jan 1.

On Tuesday, Khaled had said he would oversee a massive overhaul and anti-corruption drive following the arrest of the former Army chief by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

On Wednesday, a senior Armed Forces officer was also detained by the MACC in connection with an ongoing investigation involving the military.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reminded the Cabinet that today is the 50th anniversary of the passing of Tun Abdul Razak Hussein in 1976.

"Anwar instructed the Unity Ministry to organise a special event to commemorate the anniversary of Razak’s passing," he added.
