Senior police officer remanded over RM20,000 bribery probe

GEORGE TOWN: A police officer with the rank of Asst Supt has been remanded for four days starting Wednesday to assist in the investigation into a corruption case involving more than RM20,000.

The remand order against the 58-year-old man was issued by Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi after an application was made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Magistrate's Court here, reported Sinar Harian.

The suspect, dressed in MACC lockup attire, arrived at the courthouse at approximately 8.45am, accompanied by several MACC enforcement officers.

According to sources, the suspect was arrested at around 10.30pm on Tuesday (Jan 13) when he appeared to give a statement at the Penang MACC office.

"The suspect is believed to have requested and received bribes from five individuals totaling more than RM20,000 for the period between 2016 and 2021."

"When arrested, the suspect was still serving at the Penang Police Contingent (IPK) Headquarters," he said.

Sources also informed that MACC had been conducting intelligence on the suspect for several years before the arrest was made, following a complaint received.

"This is the first time the suspect has been arrested for the case."

"The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009," he said.
