Campus blast: Family claims body of student killed in explosion


KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) intern who died in an air-conditioning gas explosion at HELP University in Bukit Damansara on Monday (Jan 12) claimed his remains on Tuesday (Jan 13) for funeral arrangements.

The victim's family was seen arriving at the Forensic Department of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) at approximately 2:45pm before leaving the premises at 3:55pm.

The Dean of UTAR's Electrical and Electronic Engineering Faculty, Prof Chang Yoong Choon was also seen arriving at 3:22pm to meet with the victim's family.

According to Chang, who spoke on behalf of the family, they expressed their gratitude for the media coverage but declined to disclose the location of the funeral.

"The family does not authorise me to disclose the location of the funeral. So for the university, some of the management of the university together with some of his good friends, we will pay our last respects to the student at the funeral," he said when met outside the HKL Forensic Department Tuesday.

In the 11.40am incident on Monday, one person was killed while nine others were injured, including four students, following an air conditioning gas explosion at HELP University.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus reportedly said that the deceased had been identified as 24-year-old Soo Yu Juan.

The victim was a third-year mechanical engineering student and was scheduled to complete his industrial training this Thursday (Jan 15). - Bernama
