Acquisition of MPMS 2 vessel a strategic step to strenghten maritime ops, says MMEA DG

PUTRAJAYA: The acquisition of the Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) 2 is a highly significant strategic step in efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), particularly in the South China Sea waters, says Maritime Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah.

The MMEA director-general said the acquisition of the strategic assets reflects the Madani government's ongoing commitment to ensure the readiness of the country's maritime security agencies remains at an optimal level to face increasingly complex security challenges.

"The MMEA is very grateful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Home Ministry led by Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, as well as all parties involved, for their support and trust," he said in a statement Thursday (Jan 8).

On Wednesday (Jan 7), Bernama reported that Anwar and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan witnessed the signing of seven documents, including a Letter of Intent (LoA) for the procurement of an MPMS 2 vessel.

The signing of the relevant documents took place during the Prime Minister's three-day official visit to Turkiye, which began on Tuesday at the invitation of Erdogan.

Mohd Rosli said the vessel, to be built by Desan Shipyard in Turkiye, is worth approximately US$83.75mil (RM350mil) and will serve as an important complementary asset, particularly for long-range operations with high-tech capabilities.

From the specification aspect, he said the ship was designed as a multi-role operational platform, with a length of 99m and a width of 17m, capable of reaching a maximum speed exceeding 20 knots and operating continuously for up to 30 days without resupply.

The vessel is capable of accommodating 70 crew members and 30 passengers or additional members, in addition to being equipped with separate cell facilities that can hold up to 45 detainees in line with the operational requirements of maritime law enforcement, he said.

According to him, the ship's operational capabilities are enhanced by a helicopter deck, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system for surveillance and intelligence purposes, and four fast interceptor boats (FICs) to support coastal patrols and rapid enforcement actions.

"The ship is also equipped with a mini-hospital facility and appropriate weapons systems to ensure the safety of the crew and operations in high-risk areas," he also said.

Therefore, he is optimistic that with the acquisition of the ship, the people will have confidence that the safety of the country's waters remains a government priority. - Bernama
