‘Umno crucial for unity government stability’

HULU SELANGOR: Umno remains an important partner in the unity government, and its participation has helped ensure political stability, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Pakatan Harapan secretary-general, when asked to comment on recent calls for Umno to leave the unity government, said he was confident in Umno’s leadership, adding that the stability supported economic growth and a more organised administration.

“They have eight ministers, and if we look at it from that angle, they have a very strong role in the unity government. I believe that mature politics was shown by Umno, and in the context of the governance, has helped maintain stability and unity.

“The government is compact, intact, united and functioning,” he said when met after an identity card handover ceremony here.

On calls for Umno and PAS to reform the Muafakat Nasional coalition, the Home Minister said that PAS should solve the issues in Perlis first.

“Then they can see how and learn from our example on how the unity government solves political matters within,” he said.

On another matter, Saifuddin Nasution said the proposed Bill to limit the term of the Prime Minister to no more than 10 years or two terms is reasonable.

He added that two terms were enough time for a Prime Minister to implement and see his ideas come into action.

“In fact, it also sends a strong signal that holding this position is not meant to be a long-term tenure, as it is guided by principles and responsibility.”
