Anwar arrives in Türkiye for three-day official visit


ANKARA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived here on Tuesday local time (Jan 6) for a three-day official visit to Türkiye to further strengthen the long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, was visiting the country until Jan 8 at the invitation of Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The special aircraft carrying Anwar, accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and members of the delegation, landed at the Esenboga International Airport at 7.13pm local time (12.13am, Jan 7 Malaysia Time).

He was accompanied by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

The Prime Minister was greeted upon arrival by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Malaysian Ambassador to Türkiye Sazali Mustafa Kamal, and Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Güler, who is also the Minister-in-Attendance.

Upon arrival, Anwar is scheduled to attend the Sentuhan Kasih Madani ceremony with the Malaysian diaspora at a local hotel on Tuesday night, local time.

On Wednesday, among other engagements, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Erdogan and co-chair the Malaysia-Türkiye High-Level Strategic Council (HLSC) Meeting.

Anwar was also scheduled to deliver a public lecture in Ankara and visit Istanbul, with a focus on strengthening economic cooperation through a roundtable session with Turkish companies and a media interaction session to outline the direction of Malaysia-Türkiye relations.

According to Wisma Putra, Malaysia's total trade with Türkiye from January to November 2025 amounted to RM21.2bil (USD4.92bil).

"In 2024, Turkiye was Malaysia's third-largest trading partner, largest export destination and fourth-largest source of imports among West Asia countries, with total trade valued at RM24.15bil (USD5.28bil)," Wisma Putra said in a statement. – Bernama
