Woman drowns, brother goes missing during family beach outing in Dungun

DUNGUN: A New Year’s Day outing saw one family member drowned and another going missing at Pantai Sura Tengah here on Thursday (Jan 1).

Dungun OCPD Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir said Nor Baizura Shafie, 39, drowned while her brother Mohd Fazir, 37, went missing while on a picnic with 13 other relatives at the beach.

"During the incident, Nor Baizura was believed to be drowning when she was in the water and her brother tried to save her but failed.

"Both victims were said to have drifted before sinking below the surface," he told reporters at the scene.

Nor Baizura’s body was found at 10.54am by rescuers and was sent to Hospital Dungun for further action.

Meanwhile, Dungun fire station chief Shahrizal Shamsudin said 10 firefighters rushed to the scene after a distress call at 10.27am.

"Rescuers faced difficulties because of big waves and strong currents before the victim was found and brought to shore," he said, adding that the search for Fazir was ongoing. – Bernama
