BUKIT MERTAJAM: The driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) who rammed into another driver at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road Toll Plaza near Prai is being investigated for attempted murder and has been remanded for five days.
Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Asst Comm Helmi Aris said the 31-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday (Dec 29) along with his 23-year-old wife after the victim lodged a police report.
He said investigations revealed that the incident took place at around 11.30pm pm Dec 28, while the victim and his wife were driving towards Penang Sentral.
"The victim's vehicle, driven by his wife, encountered a problem at the RFID lane, which prevented the toll barrier from opening.
"The victim exited his vehicle and requested the driver of the SUV to reverse his car," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 30).
However, the suspect shouted at the man before accelerating his vehicle, which hit both the victim and car, before fleeing the scene.
He said the victim sustained scratches on his big toe and pain in several parts of his body and had to seek outpatient treatment.
ACP Helmi said the suspect and his wife both tested positive for cannabis.
He said the Bukit Mertajam Magistrates' Court granted a five-day remand order against the suspect, a businessman who also has a criminal record, until Jan 3, 2026, under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
He added that the suspect's vehicle was also been seized. – Bernama
