EC receives 133 representations on Sarawak electoral boundary review

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has received 133 representations on the proposed review of federal and state electoral constituencies in Sarawak.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the representations were received after the EC held a month long display of the proposed review of the federal and state electoral constituencies in Sarawak from Sept 1 to 30.

Of the total, 126 representations were objections, while seven supported the proposed review.

"Accordingly, the EC will hold a special meeting to examine and discuss all the representations received, particularly those that meet the requirements for consideration for the purpose of a Local Inquiry.

"This is in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution and the procedures for the review of electoral boundaries in force," he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 8).

Khairul Shahril said the EC would decide on the Local Inquiry process after the special meeting, with notices to attend the proceedings to be sent to all eligible parties at least two weeks before the proceedings.

The EC has two years to complete the review, starting from the date the notice referred to in Section 4 of the 13th Schedule to the Federal Constitution was published, namely Sept 1, 2026.

The period runs until the final review report is submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as provided under Clause 10 of Article 113 of the Federal Constitution. — Bernama
