Ipoh man arrested after running amok with samurai sword, hurting family

IPOH: Police arrested a man who ran amok with a samurai sword and injured his family members in Bandar Baru Putra here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the 29-year-old man was arrested on Thursday (Dec 26) morning.

"We received an emergency call at about 6.40am, and a team of policemen rushed to the location to investigate the incident.

"After we arrived, we found the suspect, who tried to escape by climbing up onto the roof and entered a neighbour's compound," he said in a statement.

"We managed to track him down and arrest him without further untoward incidents," he added.

ACP Abang Zainal Abidin said the two injured victims - the man's parents, both 54 - were rushed to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment and are reportedly stable.

"Initial checks found that the suspect has mental health treatment issues and had sought psychiatric treatment before.

"Suspect claimed he was unaware of what he was doing and felt that he was being chased by ghosts," he said, adding that the matter would be investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons.

"The people are advised not to speculate on the matter, which could jeopardise investigations.

"We will continue to keep tabs on the matter and will take the necessary actions according to the law," he said.

"We urge the people to always cooperate with the police by forwarding valid information," he added.
